JUST RESTING

The boulangerie in Angles-sur-l'Anglin at night.

We are back in the UK.  Our Schengen allowance of 90 days has been and gone and we will be here until our next Schengen period clocks over in another 90 days.  There is much unpacking, sorting and catching up to do as we settle back into our English life.  The 90 days we spent in France already seem like a dream.  It's a different world and there's much to tell.

  1. Looking forward to some tales of your stay - meanwhile, hope life Back in Blighty is good to you. Have you changed the sticker on your card from GB to UK ??

    1. We are dubious about putting a UK sticker on our car. A friend wrote "UK" on a letter from France and it went to the Ukraine.

  2. Welcome back! Just as I am off to get my Carte Sejour next week - I'll let you know how it goes! By the way, if you did apply, did you notice that the reply email gives you a temporary right to say while your application is processed, equivalent to the carte itself.
As it turned out I feel like we have lost a summer - indeed, we have - not just to COVID but to bereavement which is so stressful. But I go on - glad you had a good trip in the end.

  3. Is this 90 day thing because of Brexit? Mind you we can't even leave our city at the moment let alone go somewhere else. Cheers

    1. It is indeed. We are still allowed to spend six months in France every year as non residents but only 90 days in any 180 day period.
Gone are the days when those Brits who have a house anywhere in Europe, not just in France, can arrive on 1st April and leave on 30th September. After three months they have to leave the whole of Europe and not return until 90 more days have passed. Which means not until October. They (we) effectively have to exchange three summer months for three winter ones, which is not why most people have a home in Europe.

  4. Did you notice any growing hostility from the French?

    1. There were a couple of occasions when I did briefly wonder. Although in the end I put both incidents down to the usual stroppiness of some French people, which has always been there. The locals were thrilled to see us back and our friends who live there full time are experiencing nothing untoward.

  5. I"m sorry we didn't manage to get together while you were here in France. Maybe next time.

    1. Me too, the time flew by and we were somewhat overwhelmed with house repairs. I look forward to catching up with you next year, let's hope it's more normal.

  6. That 90 days soon passed, it doesn’t seem long since you were preparing to leave the UK. Still, after Christmas you can be thinking about your return to France. If we were in the same situation, which we are not as we are currently resident in Italy, I’d have trouble juggling which months I wanted to be where especially as we need to be in Italy late October and early November to harvest our olives.

    1. The time certainly flew by. Our 90 days out of the Schengen area clocks over just before Christmas and we plan to spend a couple of weeks in France after that.
