There are so many of these old ruins in France - dozens round us in the Alps. It always brings home to me how tranquil a time we live in and how different it was back then.
Life was no doubt much more turbulent and uncertain even than during the times we now live in. I am often thankful to have been born in the 20th century and not four or five hundred years before.
