When we went to France on the motorbike, we couldn't find the campsite where we planned to stay overnight. We stopped at a petrol station and I went in and asked direction in my rudimentary French. I came out and announced it was 1km up the road, with the red curtains. Well we found the place with red curtains. But we definitely were not stopping overnight with her! It was then I realised I'd confused rideau with drapeau. Fortunately we then saw the red flags of the campsite.
Amazing place by the looks - I have laughed at the 'cash for curtains' scandal here in the UK, and even better the references to the 'Carrie Antoinette' - whoever thought that up has a genius wit.
Mark, it is indeed ridiculous, yet the PM has shown his true colours (again) with this one. I bet you can remember exactly who paid for your last redecoration or new furniture and I bet it wasn't somebody wanting a favour! No wonder "getting away with it" has become a national pastime, taking the example from the politicians. Not to mention the insult to all those people who wish they could afford furnish their homes with stuff from John Lewis!
What a little jewel she is, sitting on the water of her moat! I remember taking a tour there once. They showed us the kitchen, and a sunken sink where they could place the dishes to be washed clean by the flowing water. "What? In cold water?" was my reaction. I must have been pretty young and naive as to historical standards of cleanliness!
